SUPER CUP FINALS DAY

Sunday 27th April saw Lanarkshire Netball Association’s SUPER CUP FINALS DAY in John Wright Sports Centre, East Kilbride.

This day was the final event of the years league which saw games between our 5 teams: New Zealand Warriors, Fiji Flames, Australian All Stars, Barbados Blades, Singapore Sharks, and this years invited 6th league team, The Scottish U21 squad. We would like to thank Lee Ann Carragher and her squad for their participation, which added a new and exciting dimension to the Supercup. For the finals day we invited a Lanarkshire Select team. Lead by Karen McCay, this team of experienced and young players played the 5th placed team.

The day opened with a coaching session for South and North Lanarkshire’s U15 and U17 netballers. Coaches Jane Elliot, Janet Mackie and Alison Craig divided the hour into 2 stations: defence and shooting. The girls worked hard learning new warm ups, drills and skills, as well as meeting new netballers. A big thank you goes to the coaches for donating their time to helping promote netball to our junior players.

Our first game of the day saw 5th placed Barbados Blades –v- Lanarkshire Select. Lanarkshire proved they were a side to reckon with by taking the lead in the first quarter 11-7 and extending this to 19-13 in the second. A change of players at half time helped Blades pull back the goal difference to only 2 goals before the final quarter. Team Captain Kerry Callaghan worked tirelessly to pull her team back onto a leading streak and managed to turn the game around to beat Lanarkshire Select by 8 goals finishing 35-27. This effort saw Kerry win Player of the Tournament.

The play off for 3rd and 4th positions took place next: Singapore Sharks –v- New Zealand Warriors. Team Captain Linda Mitchell and her Sharks had fought some of the closest games throughout the competition, some ending in their favour, some against. Team Captain Evonne Moore and her Warriors had similar experiences, with often no more then 3 or 4 goals being the dividing line between wining and loosing. Would this game be history repeating itself? After the first quarter 10-8 Sharks and the 2nd 22-19 Sharks, it was still to early to call it. However, Warriors came into their own in the 3rd and pushed the goal difference to 6 in their favour and extended this to 8 in the last to win the game 45-37.

The final to decide 1st and 2nd places came at the end of the day. Fiji Flames -v- Australian All Stars. Team Captain Angela Bell and her Flames went into the final as favourites having won 4 out of the 5 league games over the year. Team Captain Bernie Hunter and her All Stars had played some great games but hadn’t had the same winning streak as Flames, with only 2 wins under their belt. But with All Stars having one of the better goal differences it was still an interesting match on paper. But true to form Flames started well and finished the first quarter 19-6 ahead. Despite a few positional changes to All Stars, Flames pushed ahead in the 2nd to finish 31-14. The scoring duo of Flames proved impossible to beat and youth won over experience in the circle with the final score 65-33 proving this. Both teams had an enjoyable if not testing game.

Our thanks go to the Umpires: Irene Watson, Catherine McNee, Arlene Leary, Carolene Logan, Ann Marie Peacock and Anne Abraitis. The Lanarkshire U15/U17 acted as scorers, timekeepers and ball girls for the day.

Thanks to Ann McKelvie, Christine Barlas and Margaret Thompson for overseeing the announcement, music and presentations.

Thanks to Mary Frances McNeil and South Lanarkshire Leisure for facilities and buffet provided.

All teams and coaches received mementoes and trophies to mark this occasion in Lanarkshire Netballs calendar. Donations from James Dunn, James Smith (Denny) Ltd and Motherwell College helped fund this years event.
