New legal status for non-profit clubs

You may be aware of the discussion paper published by the Scottish Law Commission. The paper proposes a new legal status for non-profit clubs and associations (unincorporated associations). This is likely to affect many ordinary sports clubs and some governing bodies.

This article is to seek representatives from sports clubs to inform the discussion at a series of public meetings organised by the Law Commission and SCVO.
There are three meetings:
19 Jan at Mansfield Traquair Centre, Edinburgh between 2 and 5pm
Travel directions: http://www.scvo.org.uk/scvo/Home/ContactUs.aspx

30 Jan at Centrum House, Queen Street, Glasgow between 1 and 4pm
Travel directions: http://www.scvo.org.uk/scvo/AboutSCVO/OfficeDetail.aspx?al=t&BranchID=162971&from=AOD

3 Feb at Fairway House, Inverness between 2 and 5pm.
Travel directions: http://www.scvo.org.uk/scvo/AboutSCVO/OfficeDetail.aspx?al=t&BranchID=162972&from=AOD

The proposals will affect both sports and arts clubs across the whole of Scotland. About 75% of all unincorporated associations are likely to fall into these categories.
What we need are people who have some experience in running local not for profit sports clubs, ideally a President, Chairperson or Committee member (If you have any legal expertise even better, but not essential). Maybe a professional staff member may be suitable if they have club experience.
Can you please cascade this to your clubs, committees and regions and seek volunteers. It is important we do contribute to this debate – it could have a major and potentially positive effect on our clubs.
Volunteers should inform Jim Lugton or Nancy Fancott or Jeanette Syme at the SCVO office on 0131 556 3882 or e-mail jim.lugton@scvo.org.uk Please copy me in on the response so I can keep a tab on numbers. I also hope to seek feedback in due course for our written response to the consultation.
The full discussion paper can be found here:

http://www.scotlawcom.gov.uk/downloads/dps/dp140.pdf However, this is extensive and I am in the process of finalising a briefing paper will be shown as soon as produced.

Thank you in anticipation.
Kind regards,

(Sent on behalf of)
