The paper proposes a new legal status for non-profit clubs and associations (unincorporated associations). This is likely to affect many ordinary sports clubs and some governing bodies.

This article is to seek representatives from sports clubs to inform the discussion at a series of public meetings organised by the Law Commission and SCVO.
There are three meetings:
19 Jan at Mansfield Traquair Centre, Edinburgh between 2 and 5pm
Travel directions: http://www.scvo.org.uk/scvo/Home/ContactUs.aspx

30 Jan at Centrum House, Queen Street, Glasgow between 1 and 4pm
Travel directions: http://www.scvo.org.uk/scvo/AboutSCVO/OfficeDetail.aspx?al=t&BranchID=162971&from=AOD

3 Feb at Fairway House, Inverness between 2 and 5pm.
Travel directions: http://www.scvo.org.uk/scvo/AboutSCVO/OfficeDetail.aspx?al=t&BranchID=162972&from=AOD

The proposals will affect both sports and arts clubs across the whole of Scotland. About 75% of all unincorporated associations are likely to fall into these categories.
What we need are people who have some experience in running local not for profit sports clubs, ideally a President, Chairperson or Committee member (If you have any legal expertise even better, but not essential). Maybe a professional staff member may be suitable if they have club experience.
Can you please cascade this to your clubs, committees and regions and seek volunteers. It is important we do contribute to this debate – it could have a major and potentially positive effect on our clubs.
Volunteers should inform Jim Lugton or Nancy Fancott or Jeanette Syme at the SCVO office on 0131 556 3882 or e-mail jim.lugton@scvo.org.uk Please copy me in on the response so I can keep a tab on numbers. I also hope to seek feedback in due course for our written response to the consultation.
The full discussion paper can be found here:

http://www.scotlawcom.gov.uk/downloads/dps/dp140.pdf However, this is extensive and I am in the process of finalising a briefing paper will be shown as soon as produced.
is delighted to have been selected for the national squad and hopes to make the cut at the end of this month.

Sarah (15), is on a long road between now and then, and although she made the first cut from 80 to 25, her big ambition is to be named in the final 20 at the end of November.

If she progresses, the final cut will be made during a training weekend at Inverclyde in February, with those selected representing Scotland at the Under-17 European Championships in Gibraltar from March 5-8.

Fourth-year pupil Sarah, who lives in Motherwell, said: “I’m very pleased to be in the squad, but it gets cut at the end of this month and I’m hoping to stay in.

“My parents were nearly crying when they heard I had been selected and are really excited for me, and Mr Hannan at Braidhurst High is really pleased for me.

“I’ve been playing netball since I was in Primary Six and got interested because my mum used to play and was picked for Scotland as well.

“It will be brilliant if I get selected because I’ll have the honour of being able to play for Scotland, represent my country and I’ll also be doing it for my mum.”

Sport runs in the Ramage family. As a youngster mum Barbara was selected for Scotland’s under-16 squad, while dad David represented his country at volleyball.

Barbara (43), a road safety education officer with North Lanarkshire Council, said: “I’m delighted for Sarah and it’s a great achievement. Competition is much stronger now than it was in my day and that’s good for the sport.

“Sarah is keeping her feet on the ground and it’s a lot of hard training and an intense programme they get put through, but Sarah’s used to that.

“She trains Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, sometimes plays on Thursdays and when national training is on, it’s usually on Saturday or Sunday.”

Braidhurst head teacher Derrick Hannan said: “Sarah is a very able pupil both academically and physically.

“She excels in everything she takes on as a challenge and has done very well at school and authority level.

“I’m delighted for Sarah and the school that she’s at this level of being capped by Scotland.”

Mr Hannan continued: “Sarah is a very competitive young person and the fact that she could be capped at under-17s at such a young age is testimony to that.”

Sarah is one of five talented Braidhurst High pupils to be selected for North Lanarkshire netball squads at under-15 and under-17 level, the others being Zoe Luke, Gemma Park, Cara Swann and Jane Biggart.

Sarah is in the Under-17 squad, which is coached by Karen Dunn, and Mr Hannan added: “Within the school Sarah and the others have been given tremendous coaching and support from Miss Joanne Lilly, and Sarah and the team reached the Scottish Schools’ semi-finals last year.

“I am delighted that the general standard of coaching has been built up and the girls are benefiting from that.”

Anyone who is interested in playing netball for North Lanarkshire should contact Karen by e-mailing: newmannetball@gmail.com

Netball four are aiming to be flowers of Scotland

Article courtesy of Paul Thomson, East Kilbride News

FOUR members of Claremont Netball Club’s under-17s are on course for selection to the national under-17 squad after making it through the first two selection processes.

The girls We would like to thank Lee Ann Carragher and her squad for their participation, which added a new and exciting dimension to the Supercup. For the finals day we invited a Lanarkshire Select team. Lead by Karen McCay, this team of experienced and young players played the 5th placed team.

The day opened with a coaching session for South and North Lanarkshire’s U15 and U17 netballers. Coaches Jane Elliot, Janet Mackie and Alison Craig divided the hour into 2 stations: defence and shooting. The girls worked hard learning new warm ups, drills and skills, as well as meeting new netballers. A big thank you goes to the coaches for donating their time to helping promote netball to our junior players.

Our first game of the day saw 5th placed Barbados Blades –v- Lanarkshire Select. Lanarkshire proved they were a side to reckon with by taking the lead in the first quarter 11-7 and extending this to 19-13 in the second. A change of players at half time helped Blades pull back the goal difference to only 2 goals before the final quarter. Team Captain Kerry Callaghan worked tirelessly to pull her team back onto a leading streak and managed to turn the game around to beat Lanarkshire Select by 8 goals finishing 35-27. This effort saw Kerry win Player of the Tournament.

The play off for 3rd and 4th positions took place next: Singapore Sharks –v- New Zealand Warriors. Team Captain Linda Mitchell and her Sharks had fought some of the closest games throughout the competition, some ending in their favour, some against. Team Captain Evonne Moore and her Warriors had similar experiences, with often no more then 3 or 4 goals being the dividing line between wining and loosing. Would this game be history repeating itself? After the first quarter 10-8 Sharks and the 2nd 22-19 Sharks, it was still to early to call it. However, Warriors came into their own in the 3rd and pushed the goal difference to 6 in their favour and extended this to 8 in the last to win the game 45-37.

The final to decide 1st and 2nd places came at the end of the day. Fiji Flames -v- Australian All Stars. Team Captain Angela Bell and her Flames went into the final as favourites having won 4 out of the 5 league games over the year. Team Captain Bernie Hunter and her All Stars had played some great games but hadn’t had the same winning streak as Flames, with only 2 wins under their belt. But with All Stars having one of the better goal differences it was still an interesting match on paper. But true to form Flames started well and finished the first quarter 19-6 ahead. Despite a few positional changes to All Stars, Flames pushed ahead in the 2nd to finish 31-14. The scoring duo of Flames proved impossible to beat and youth won over experience in the circle with the final score 65-33 proving this. Both teams had an enjoyable if not testing game.

Our thanks go to the Umpires: Irene Watson, Catherine McNee, Arlene Leary, Carolene Logan, Ann Marie Peacock and Anne Abraitis. type='text'>Super Cup Round 4

Supercup 4th Round

Australian Allstars v Barbados Blades

Match Umpires – Ann Marie Peacock & Arlene Leary

Both teams had players missing for the starting line up. Allstars had 5 points in the league going into the match from their win against the Warriors last year but Blades had yet to get their first win, despite having chances in their last match.

Barbados Blades were unable to hold onto their small lead during the first quarter when Allstars got off to a messy start, and went into the 2nd quarter a goal down. The match was close all the way with the Blades leading for most of the 3rd quarter. Allstars Keeper Patricia Howell (Coatbridge) held the Blades captain Gillian Wharton (GS) well, taking interceptions and rebounds throughout the match, but this did little to phase Gillian as she notched up the goals, greatly assisted by Jennifer Mitchell (East Kilbride) who showed steady determination throughout the match. At the start of the final quarter Blades were one goal up. While keeper Kerry Callahan (Newman) and GD Louise Simpson (Claremont) delayed the shooting of Nicola Blaney (Bell) and Karen Gould (Newman) to an extent with some excellent defending, there were few errors from the shooting duo and in the final quarter. Allstars edged ahead to take the match 45 – 41. Once again Blades were just narrowly defeated.

Outstanding players for Blades –Kerry Callahan and Gillian Wharton
Outstanding players for Allstars – Karen Gould and Patricia Howell

Scottish U21 v New Zealand Warriors

Match Umpires – Carolene Logan & Marie Doyle

It was to be an uphill task for the Warriors given U21’s impressive start to the tournament. U21’s (despite their ages) seem to appear to own the court and their presence and youthful energy can be intimidating to opponents. Warriors are without Maxine Burchill (Coatbridge) for the rest of the tournament and had swiftly signed Lee Dallas (Claremont) to bolster the centre court.

In the previous rounds Sharks and Allstars made an impact in their games against Scottish U21’s, Allstars got half the score, but it was a big ask to topple the current tournament leaders. Scottish U21 had played a faster and much more physical game than the other teams in their previous rounds.

At the start of the first quarter Warriors played confidently and with an air of optimism. They held the national team and led for the first 7 minutes of the match with some great shooting from Kirsty Waddle (East Kilbride) and Evonne Moore (Newman). A win for the Warriors seemed possible as Moira Kingsman (Newman)and Sara Scofield (East Kilbride) worked tirelessly in the defence forcing errors and creating interceptions. The Warriors were only 5 goals down going into the second half. This was without a doubt the best team performance against the tournament favourites.
For the second half the Warriors dug deep but could not conquer the giants. The skill and speed of the Scottish U21 team was winning through, and with a great all round team performance Scottish U21 advanced their lead. An injury to keeper Sara Scofield saw the switch of the WD Jill Fullarton (East Kilbride) to GK. While Jill’s excellent performance in the match as WD was influential, Scottish U21 switched their shooter to June McNeil (Internationale) who towered above the Warriors keeper, leaving the Warriors with a real height disadvantage in the circle.

The match ended 57 – 33 to Scottish U21

With Scottish U21 having sailed through their first three matches and only Fiji Flames and Barbados Blades have yet to play them. The wise money is on Scotland.

Outstanding player for U21 – June McNeil
Outstanding player for Warriors – Kirsty Waddle

Super Cup Round 3

Blades -v- Sharks

The game had a slow start, with the slowest to hit the scoreboard so far this season. Blades finally were first to score and Sharks got caught up but Blades finished 8-7 ahead. The second quarter was more fluid and Blades pulled ahead as a result of many hesitant passes from Sharks, forcing errors. Finally the 3rd quarter saw the pace the game deserved and it was an exhilarating match at last. Sharks pulled ahead to win that quarter 24-26 and continued their good play in the 4th to win the game 33-40.

All Stars -v- Scottish U21

Great start by both teams. All Stars played very well compared to the 1st game against the U21 in the Super Cup. The score was a respectable 8-12 to U21. Several missed goals from All Stars in the 2nd quarter meant U21 pulled ahead 16-24. This was a highly charged game and the 3rd saw a better round for All Stars. The defence played a great game in the 4th but U21 pulled ahead to win the game 30-60.

Lanarkshire Netball Association Meeting

Dear All.

There is a Lanarkshire Netball Association meeting on Monday, 14 January 2008, 7 - 9pm at Lifestyle, Cambuslang.

Can you please ensure all clubs are represented, outwith committee members. This was the first game for our invitational team, the U21 Scotland squad.

The first match saw Scottish U21 -v- Singapore Sharks

It was a tentative start for our Sharks as they lost the 1st quarter 3 goals to 13. Undeterred they started off the 2nd quarter with a goal for goal score line - but not even a change to the starting 7 could stop the U21 forging ahead to finish 31 –v- 9 at half time. A few line up changes for Sharks saw the 3rd quarter as their best, scoring 7 goals to finish behind 47 –v- 16. Our Sharks were put to the test against the U21 team and the game finished U21 winning 68 –v- 20. Definitely an eye opener for the other 4 teams still to play the newcomers.

The second match of the night saw New Zealand Warriers -v- Fiji Flames

Unlike the first game the opening quarter saw both teams on an even keel finishing 1 goal apart, 9-v- 10. With both teams appearing to be equally matched the second quarter was a similar paced one to the first ending 18 –v- 22. The 3rd quarter however, saw Flames pull ahead and break several of Warriers centres in a row to finish 29 -v- 36. With a gap capable of being closed Warriers fought closely in the last quarter and pulled back to a 1 goal difference. With a quickened pace and a tension close to that of the 2006 final, Flames pulled ahead at the last minute to win 46 goals to 42.

The 3rd round will be held on 29th November.

'C' Umpire Course

Due to low numbers the 'C' Umpire course has been postponed until further notice. All Stars had beaten Blades during the rounds of the competition so was history to repeat itself? Not so – this time Blades stormed ahead and by the 3rd quarter were leading All Stars by 14 goals, with a final result of 44 –v- 34 to Blades.

The final to decide 1st and 2nd places came at the end of the day. New Zealand Warriors –v- Fiji Flames was a highly anticipated game. Throughout the competition it had been close between the 2 top positioned teams with both teams achieving high scoring results. Warriors held the edge in the first 2 quarters but in the 3rd great goal scoring and aggressive attacking play by Flames saw them steal the lead 30 –v- 27. The last quarter had the crowd on the edge of their seats. With one goal in it each way it was impossible to call the winning team. However, Warriors final surge in the last 5 minutes of the game saw them win 45 –v- 37.

Our thanks go to the Umpires and Scorers for giving up their time
Umpires:

Leslie Shaw
Catherine McNee
Arlene Leary
Carolene Logan
Anne Abraitis
Ann-Marie Peacock

Scorers:
Susan Fairley
Marie Cameron

All players, coaches, and umpires were given mementos and trophy’s to mark this occasion in Lanarkshire Netballs calendar, and we hope it will continue to be as successful in future years as it has this one.

Player of the tournament was recognised by presenting a trophy to Karen Gould.

The success of this event couldn’t have been possible without our main sponsors and kit providers, Team Colours http://www.team-colours.co.uk/, and match ball suppliers Kukri, http://www.kukrisports.com/. The first quarter ended 13 all and both teams gave a good opening performance. Blades pulled ahead at the start of the 2nd quarter but All Stars closed the gap to 1 goal. The 3rd quarter saw the reverse happen: All Stars pulled ahead with Blades closing the gap to 1. Both teams went into the final quarter with a battle on their hands. Blades made some unforced errors allowing All Stars to take advantage and end the game 6 goals ahead.

The second game New Zealand Warriers -v- Singapore Sharks saw Warriers have their worst start so far loosing out 7 goals to 10. The pace was slower than their normal but undeterred they pulled back 21 - 20 in the 2nd quarter. They increased their lead to 30 - 26 in the 3rd but not without a good fight from Sharks. Sharks won the last quarter but didn't put away enough goals to stop the Warriers winning 36 - 34.

Thanks to everyone who helped out: umpires, scorers and time keepers. After the exciting opening round everyone was looking forward to the next stage in the competition

This fixture saw the Singapore Sharks make their debut against the Australian Allstars. Once again the Allstars started the match at a fast pace but the Sharks held their own and led the 1st quarter, 9 goals to 7. The 2nd quarter yielded little in the way of goals, a scrappy 15 minutes by both teams, with Allstars closing the gap by just one and reducing this to give an even score of 25 all at the end of the 3rd. It was all to play for in the last quarter with shooting and play improving by both teams. A determined effort by the Allstars defence and goal shooters saw them pull just ahead with the match ending 34-32.

The second match of the night saw the New Zealand Warriers -v- Fiji Flames. Again a fast paced 1st quarter with the Warriers pulling ahead 17-10. Flames pulled back 3 goals in the second quarter and a change of defence by them in the 3rd saw the goal difference narrow to one in favour of the Warriers. However with their shooting on form in the last quarter, Warriers finished 44-41 over the Flames.

A successful second night in the Super Cup was enjoyed by all participants, and thanks go to all involved including Event Organisers, Team Coaches, Umpires and the Barbados Blades for scoring and time keeping. The next games will be held in Larkhall Sports Centre on January 18th at 7.15pm.

LANARKSHIRE NETBALL INTRODUCES “THE SUPER CUP”

Dear LNA Member,

Welcome to the first issue of Lanarkshire Netball Association’s Newsletter!

LANARKSHIRE NETBALL INTRODUCES “THE SUPER CUP”

Thursday 9th November saw the opening matches of Lanarkshire Netball Associations latest initiative: The Super Cup. Currently providing leagues for Adult, U17, U15 and U13 levels, this new venture brings not only our elite players together but allows these age groups to play and compete against one another. With games planned for the next 4 months, the Super Cup will end with a play off day next April, with the Scottish National Squad in attendance.

The Super Cup consists of 5 teams: Australian All Stars, New Zealand Warriers, Barbados Blades, Fiji Flames and Singapore Sharks – all taking reference from some of the influential netball areas around the world. The opening 2 matches were played at Larkhall Sports Centre and allowed the competition to see what they were up against!

The opener with Australian All Stars –v- New Zealand Warriers had the anticipated fast and furious paced 1st quarter we expected before the players settled down. Warriers led from the beginning but stretched ahead in the 3rd quarter to a 13 goal lead.
